Kalahari Summer
Although for many visitors the Kalahari evokes images of winter game drives in a vast desert
of thirsty red sands, it is the capricious summer landscape that has been luring painter and
photographer Robert Grogan back to this region for more than 30 years. Together with his
wife Lee, he has braved unpredictable, sometimes violent storms, impassable roads, fierce
heat and humidity, insects and tall grass for the chance to paint the summer cloud banks and
startling local transformations rendered by the rains. He has photographed, too, not just the
iconic game, big cats and raptors, but also more transient delights of the season, like the
butterflies, meadows of wildflowers and the springbok lambing season.
Gathered together for the first time in a vibrant collection, his landscape paintings and
magnificent wildlife photographs bring the Kalahari’s lush and beautiful summer season
vividly to life
