A storm is threatening the East Coast of America, swelling the rivers and submerging the roads, and as the clouds gather on the horizon the inhabitants of a small Boston suburb feel their lives begin to spiral away from them.

Vincent, a school teacher, meets with a former student, Henry, to discuss the wrenching possibility of hospitalising his only daughter. As he offers advice, Henry, now a young psychology professor, tests the boundaries of his own marriage, while Lucinda, his pregnant wife, harbours another secret.
