Study and Revision Skills for Chemistry Examinations General techniques Organisation of study time You need to develop the ability of making notes and topic summaries as you work through your chemistry course. Your reading methods must have a purpose. For example; you should use: • Skimming:   When looking for the main topics in order to get an overall impression. • Scanning:   When looking for specific information in order to find out particular facts or conclusion. • Intensive reading:   When you are seriously studying a topic. This involves careful and thoughtful reading to get thorough understanding of the topic. Make short notes as you go along. Practical work in chemistry should not be treated separately from class work. The ideas and detailed information from the practical is important in strengthening your understanding of a topic. Organising your revision To assist and direct your concentration, plan out a timetable for revision that uses short blocks of a maximum of 60 minutes.
